City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Inspection and Testing (2391-52) – Initial & Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations


Course Overview

This qualification is designed for practising electricians who want to gain formal recognition for their skills in inspection and testing. It covers both initial verification of new electrical installations and periodic inspection and testing of existing systems in accordance with current industry requirements (BS 7671: 2018, Amendment 2).

Learners will develop the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out inspection, testing, and certification of electrical installations safely and effectively.


Who is this course for?

  • Practising electricians with experience in electrical installation.

  • Learners who wish to progress to roles involving inspection, testing, and certification.

  • Those working towards becoming Approved Electricians or applying for a JIB Gold Card.


Entry Requirements

  • Learners should already hold a recognised Level 3 qualification in electrical installation (e.g., NVQ 2357/2365 or equivalent).

  • A sound knowledge of the current IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) is strongly recommended.

  • Prior practical experience of inspection and testing is essential.


Course Content

Learners will cover both theory and practical aspects of inspection and testing, including:

  1. Safe isolation procedures and health & safety requirements.

  2. Initial verification of new installations.

  3. Periodic inspection of existing installations.

  4. Completion of certification and reports (EIC, MEIWC, EICR).

  5. Use of test instruments for continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, RCD testing, and prospective fault current.

  6. Recording and interpreting test results in line with industry standards.

  7. Identifying non-compliance with BS 7671 and making appropriate recommendations.


Assessment

The qualification is assessed through:

  • Online multiple-choice exam (knowledge of inspection & testing).

  • Written assignment (scenarios on inspection & testing processes).

  • Practical assessment (carrying out inspection, testing, and completing documentation).

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Carry out safe isolation of electrical circuits and installations.

  • Perform inspection and testing in line with industry standards.

  • Complete and verify electrical installation certificates and reports.

  • Apply BS 7671 requirements to both new and existing installations.
